An Alternative to Tunnel Vision at Stonehenge

The Planning Inspectorate recently rejected the government-backed A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down Improvement Scheme which included a tunnel at Stonehenge and a northern bypass for Winterbourne Stoke.

Following this, a petition has been launched which supports an alternative approach; this comprises the dualling of the A303 on it’s present line but in a shallow cutting past Stonehenge and the northen bypass of Winterbourne Stoke on the same line but less elevated. This delivers the same benefits as the tunnel but can be completed quicker, at a lower cost and with less environmental damage.
