Tilshead - Community First Responders

Co-ordinator Jason Miller brings the good news that we now have
six qualified First Responders 'on call'in the village,
with another to join us shortly.
If you would like to be involved in this potentially life-saving project,
please get in touch with him.

I am delighted to report that we now have seven Community First Responders in Tilshead. Six out of seven of the volunteers are now active and have been on call since Friday 19 February 2010. One more volunteer is expected to begin in the near future. Regrettably since our last update Sue Curran has left the Community First Responder team as she is no longer able to commit the time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sue for her time and enthusiasm during the training.

I would like to remind everybody during a medical emergency please call 999 as you would normally, please do not be tempted to contact a Community First Responder directly as this may cause confusion in the Emergency Operations Centre and slow down the medical response time.

A Community First Responder is not sent in place of an ambulance but in addition. Because the First Responder is closer, they can respond more quickly. A First Responder is trained in simple techniques which can help to preserve life while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. We carry a medical kit that includes defibrillators and oxygen. Each kit cost £1,500, and we are most grateful to Tilshead Newsletter, which has provided the funds to buy the first kit, and to Tilshead Parish Council, which has given us a grant of £300 to help with other costs. If you see us fundraising for a second kit please contribute, as this service benefits the whole community.

The role of the Community First Responder is to use emergency aid to:
