Nursery School Newsletter - February 2008
Because of our very rural situation and the fact that parents often have children at both Nursery and Primary schools, there is constant travelling to and fro to collect children at different times of the day. We would like to offer our parents afternoon sessions, initially one afternoon per week (Wednesday) so that Nursery children would remain in school till 3.00 pm and would then be collected together with their older siblings. We have canvassed our parents and they would be delighted with this arrangement and would like more afternoon sessions!
We applied to OFSTED for a change in our registration from Sessional Care to Full Day Care and this was granted in February, following our excellent inspection in November 2007 (see report on this page).
Therefore, we commenced our first afternoon session on 27th February 2008. There were eight children present, all of whom are on our register. The afternoon session began with Lunch Club and then a visit to Primary School to watch some television. Since it was a beautiful Spring day, we went for a walk and admired the snowdrops, daffodils and aconites along the lane behind the school.
We returned to Nursery School, a little tired, and settled down on our "Ladybird" cushions for a story and a snack before parents arrived at 3.00pm. A very successful first afternoon session. In following weeks, we will continue our walks (weather permitting) and we will introduce "Parent Time", when a different parent each week will join us to tell a story or sing a song with the children just before the end of the session.
On 2nd March, there will be a Mothering Sunday service in church to which the Nursery has been invited. There will be refreshments before the service and there will be posies for the children to present to their Mothers.
On 18th March there will be an Easter Egg Hunt at Nett Farm in Shrewton and no doubt the Easter Bunny will be working hard to make it exciting for the children!
The theme for this term is Space! We will explore the solar system, planets, stars, moon and sky - we will make rockets and oxygen cylinders too!

OFSTED Inspection Report November 2007
OFSTED is the Government Office for Standards in Education. To function as a Nursery School, the setting must be registered and inspected by Ofsted, usually every three years. The Inspection is based on the 14 National Standards with which we must comply.
Our Nursery School has had an excellent report; we are very proud of our results. The report has been circulated to all parents and carers and will shortly be published on the Ofsted website.
A few excerpts : The standards of care and nursery education are good. Children are cared for in a welcoming, child centred and secure environment and are ready to learn. Teaching and learning are good, the children concentrate well and enjoy having the freedom to choose their own activities and initiate their own play. Staff know the children extremely well and plan activities to meet individual needs. Children are very independent, mathematical development is well fostered, they learn well about their community and local environment. Children have good opportunities to develop their physical skills and to play outside in the fresh air. They enjoy weekly music and movement sessions, they go for local nature walks and there is a very good range of interesting and challenging outside play resources in the Nursery's attached garden.
Children behave very well, they are very happy and settled; they have very good support and individual attention and their achievements are continuously acknowledged and praised. The Nursery has strong partnership with parents in regard to nursery education, and strong links with the adjacent Primary School.
Organisation, leadership and management are good, the Nursery aims to provide an inclusive provision where every child matters.
Congratulations to Playleader Anne White, Deputy Playleader Kate Rogers and Play Assistant Tasmine Fowler - a great result!
